The Roses: Wickedly Funny Film Available Now on Blu-ray!

Posted on November 25, 2025 | Filed Under: Pop Culture, Reviews | Tags: Benedict Cumberbatch, Olivia Colman, Searchlight Pictures, The Roses | 9 Comments

“The Roses” is a dark comedy starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman, who play husband and wife, Theo and Ivy Rose.

What started out as a happy marriage eventually deteriorates into a cautionary tale of dysfunction, greed and ambition. Their relationship is so fiery that not even a marriage counselor could help.

Divorce lawyers are hired; friends take sides and a fight over their precious house ensues. Allison Janney is hilarious as Ivy Rose’s lawyer!

Life seems easy for picture-perfect couple Ivy (Olivia Colman) and Theo (Benedict Cumberbatch): successful careers, a loving marriage, great kids. But beneath the façade of their supposed ideal life, a storm is brewing – as Theo’s career nosedives while Ivy’s own ambitions take off, a tinderbox of fierce competition and hidden resentment ignites. The Roses is a reimagining of the 1989 classic film “The War of the Roses,” based on the novel by Warren Adler.

As someone who watches a lot of British TV and films, I enjoyed the biting wit of Ivy (Olivia Colman) and Theo (Benedict Cumberbatch). I’m not sure if the script was written with them in mind, but either way – I just love how they sling barbs at each other with their British accents!

The supporting cast is equally funny and played by Andy Samberg, Belinda Bromilow, Jamie Demetriou, Kate McKinnon, Ncuti Gatwa, Sunita Mani and Zoë Chao.

There are so many special features on both the Digital and Blu-ray versions. I enjoyed watching the behind-the-scenes featurettes and seeing the deleted scenes with both new and returning cast members!

The Digital and Blu-ray releases have bonus materials. Check out the details below!

Digital & Blu-ray Bonus Materials*

  • Gag Reel
  • Featurettes:
    • A House To Fight For – A behind-the-front-door look at the epicenter of both beauty and acrimony. See the construction of the Roses’ home, hear from the designer and the filmmakers on their vision, and discover the actors’ wish to take everything from the house home with them.
    • The Roses: An Inside Look – Hear from the cast and filmmakers about making The Roses. Learn about the actors’ connection and chemistry, and join the grounded, satirical, British, wry wit that only Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch can pull off.
    • Comedy Gold – This cast is stacked with comedy talent bringing Tony McNamara’s witty dialogue to life with Jay Roach directing. Even Olivia Colman had to ask about this special cast, “How the F did we get them?”

*Bonus features may vary by product and retailer

I loved reading about The Roses, the modern twist on a familiar story feels both fresh and chaotic in all the best ways. The cast seems to bring tension and laughs in equal measure, which makes me can’t wait to check it out on Blu-ray.

I’ll have to watch that. Benedict Cumberbatch is one of my favorite actors, but I haven’t had time to watch The Roses yet. Also, there aren’t enough comedies out there. Looking forward to this one.
