“A Real Pain” is a humorous and poignant film starring Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network) and Kieran Culkin (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World). The two leads play cousins who reunite for a tour through Poland to honor their beloved grandmother. While on the trip, their personalities clash and old tensions rise to the surface.
The movie has a deeply personal meaning for Jesse Eisenberg, who not only wrote the film, but directed it. There’s a behind-the-scenes clip featured on both Digital and Blu-ray that explains the family connection. See for yourself in the snippet below!
Both actors give great performances. While Jesse’s character (David) is neurotic and brooding, it’s Kieran Culkin (who plays Benji) that steals every scene that he’s in. Benji is funny, loud, and charming. The tour group instantly gravitates towards his boisterous personality and although at times he is abrasive, people are quick to give him a pass for his outbursts. It’s no wonder that Culken was nominated and won the Golden Globe for his performance. It’s the showier role (Benji’s sarcasm and wit will remind you of Culkin’s character on Succession), but it’s worth noting that writer-director Eisenberg was nominated for Best Screenplay at the Globes and is also nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.
The supporting cast includes Will Sharpe (The White Lotus), Jennifer Grey (Dirty Dancing), and Daniel Oreskes (Only Murders in the Building).
On February 4th, “A Real Pain” will be available to purchase on Blu-ray and/or DVD. It’s currently available to buy or rent on Digital from all major digital retailers (Prime Video, Apple TV, Fandango at Home, etc.).
