We all know that sometimes the best deals happen at the last minute. Take the New York City TKTS ticket booth for example. A friend of mine told me about her trip to NYC & how she wanted to see a musical on Broadway. She saved money by going through the TKTS ticket booth in Times Square, which sells tickets to Broadway and Off-Broadway shows at 30-50% off the day of the show. Theater owners don’t want the unbooked tickets to go to waste & theater-goers are able to save some cash. Win-win for all!
A new service called Unbooked Appointments takes a similar approach. It allows you to search online & book services in the beauty, health, fitness, auto or home & garden industries at a substantial savings. The idea is that you book an appointment with a company during off-peak times. The company doesn’t want to miss out on sales during a slow time period & so it will reduce the price of that service, passing the savings on to you.
Unbooked Appointments offers its services in various SoCal counties (Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and San Diego counties), as well as Miami Dade County in Florida & Knox County in Tennessee. Recently I booked an appointment with a local San Fernando Valley hair salon to get my hair blown out. It was relatively easy to book an appointment.

One thing I noticed when I booked my appointment is that many of these time slots for health & beauty treatments (in the LA County region) are offered during the weekday. Therefore it will be a challenge for my friends with 9-5 jobs to take advantage of these savings. To reiterate, the business model of this service is that you are booking times with retailers/companies during off-peak times. However, location does make a difference. In a recent search for a massage or facial in Orange County, there were several retailers offering services on the weekend. Overall it appears that Orange County had the most businesses to pick from & a wider selection of services offered. However, I’m confident that as the business grows, Unbooked Appointments will have more to choose from in all counties.
Weighing the pros & cons, I feel that Unbooked Appointments is a great idea because unlike similar services out there, I don’t have to pay a membership fee or purchase a block of fitness classes or massage services (which causes me to stress out, trying fit it all in before the coupon expiration date). I’m hopeful that more businesses will get on board in the San Fernando Valley so that I can have more to choose from in the future!
