Chances are that if you are a parent of a toddler & you live in Sherman Oaks, Encino or Studio City, then you’ve been to The Playroom. It is an indoor play space for kids & also a place where you can host birthday parties or playdates. I remember going there a few years ago for an event when I worked in marketing for UrbanSitter.
Suzanne Altman is the owner of The Playroom. It was her son that inspired her to open up this play space, which I found to be spacious, clean & brightly colored – containing tons of fun things to entertain your kids.
Please meet the latest Real Mom of the SFV, Suzanne Altman!
How/why did you begin your business?
Suzanne: I used to work as a comptroller running other people’s businesses, but when my oldest son was just a toddler, I took him to play at an indoor play space where he contracted a serious virus which ended him up in the hospital for 4-plus days. It was a horrifying experience and I decided that what the neighborhood really needed was an indoor play and party place that was clean and safe. Seven months after, with much planning, The Playroom opened its doors to the community.
As a working mother, what is one tip or piece of advice that you would give to other female entrepreneurs?
Suzanne: Network, work with other like-minded people but make sure there is give and take on both sides. Another piece of advice would be to make sure to write things down, plan your days and make sure to schedule time for yourself.
What do you like best about having a business in the San Fernando Valley?
Suzanne: The community. I like being able to go places and bump into people I know whether from business or personal. I love being the go-to spot for San Fernando families and having a local place where everyone feels at home.
If there was one thing you wish you knew before you began your business, what would that be?
Suzanne: I wish I had known of all the available resources for woman entrepreneurs, that kind of support and feedback back then would have been priceless.
