School may be over for kids, but summertime is the perfect opportunity to break open a book and do some summer reading! I just finished reading “Nina Soni, Perfect Hostess” which is a new book written by Kashmira Sheth. It’s a fun read for middle schoolers and up!
So what is the book about? Here is a quick synopsis:
Nina’s grandmother is coming to visit, all the way from India. Nina can’t wait to see Dadi—but then it turns out that Montu, her annoying cousin, will also be coming. Still, it will be fun to introduce her extended family to life and friends in Madison, Wisconsin, and Nina is determined to become the perfect hostess. Surely, she can manage to plan a lovely visit, with the help of the lists she makes in her journal.
While this book is part of a series, you don’t have to read the other books to get into the storyline. “Nina Soni, Perfect Hostess” is engaging and entertaining on its own!
One thing I like about this book is how it introduces Indian American culture to young readers. In the book, Noni helps her grandma (Dadi) cook gajar halwa, which is an Indian dessert made with carrots. I’m a big believer in food helping bridge the gap between cultures and although I live in LA where Indian food abounds, I know there are other cities in the United States that don’t have access to those restaurants.
I found the book relatable because everyone has, at one time or another, had a family member stay with them while visiting. Disagreements or misunderstandings are bound to happen. Regardless of your cultural background, in many ways, we are more alike than different.
I encourage you to pick-up a copy of “Nina Soni, Perfect Hostess” by Kashmira Sheth. If this book is any indicator, her entire Nina Soni book series is perfect for middle graders. The illustrations for this book are by Jenn Kocsmiersky are fun too.
