After spending the majority of her school year looking at screens because of online distance-learning, the last think I wanted my daughter to do was stare at a TV or an iPad during the summer. In my opinion, summers are meant for running around outside and reading books. Luckily for my daughter, she got to read “Violet and the Pie of Life” which is a new book by Debra Green.
So what is the book about? Here is a quick synopsis:
Twelve-year-old Violet has two great loves in her life: math and pie. She also loves her parents, even though her mom is a bit of a nagger and her dad can be unreliable. Combined with friendship troubles, Violet realizes friendship and family have more variables than she thought. Filled with warmth, math-y humor, and delicious pie, this heartfelt book includes illustrated charts, graphs, and diagrams throughout.
Violet is going through some tough times because her parents have separated. She joins the school production of “The Wizard of Oz” in an attempt to bring her parents together. However, her best friend McKenzie tries to get her to quit the play because she did not get a good part in it.
Although my daughter is not in seventh grade, it wasn’t too long ago, so she could relate to the emotions that Violet is experiencing with her friends. She liked that there are ratios, graphs and charts in the book because the visuals made it very engaging. Said Chloe, “The story is very interesting and I wanted to know what happens after each chapter.”
As a mother of a teen girl, I found it refreshing that the main character is so enthusiastic about math. The story has a lot of humor and heart, perfect for ages 8-12 (or even older)! 😉
