Last week I saw an early screening of Babes, starring Ilana Glazer and Michelle Buteau. Not only is Ilana a lead actress in the film, but she also co-wrote the screenplay with Josh Rabinowitz.

Babes is director Pamela Adlon’s feature-length directorial debut and the subject matter is one that she is very familiar with. After all, she is the co-creator, writer/director and star of FX’s Better Things a TV show about a single mom who is a working actor (Pamela Adlon) and mother of three children.

If you haven’t heard of the movie, check out the synopsis below and watch the trailer. One thing to note, the trailer does contain a few curse words, so if you have small children around or are near folks who might not want to hear it, then be mindful of that.
BABES follows inseparable childhood best friends Eden (Ilana Glazer) and Dawn (Michelle Buteau), having grown up together in NYC, now firmly in different phases of adulthood. When carefree and single Eden decides to have a baby on her own after a one-night stand, their friendship faces its greatest challenge. BABES delves into the complexities of female friendship with a blend of laughter, tears, and labor pains.
From co-writers Ilana Glazer and Josh Rabinowitz and directed by Pamela Adlon, BABES is a hilarious and heartfelt comedy about the bonds of friendship and the messy, unpredictable challenges of adulthood and becoming a parent.
Hasan Minhaj (Haunted Mansion, The Morning Show) is Dawn’s super supportive husband. Frankly during a lot of their scenes, I kept thinking ‘relationship goals.’
Rounding out the cast is John Carroll Lynch (American Horror Story, Veep) who plays Eden’s OB/GYN, Oliver Platt (The Bear, Chicago Med) who is Eden’s dad, and Sandra Bernhard (American Horror Story, Pose) who plays Dr. Shirley, Dawn’s colleague at work.
The film is hilarious with tender moments too. Motherhood isn’t all hearts and roses, but the movie shows in a funny and moving way that women can do hard things and come out the other side for the better. But don’t take my word for it, listen to the cast and creatives of Babes talk about the film in the video below!
@realmomofsfv Caught an early screening of @NEON’s #BabesMovie that’s directed by #PamelaAdlon & stars #IlanaGlazer & MichelleButeau! It’s hilarious & has tender moments at the same time. Motherhood isn’t all hearts & roses, but the movie shows (in a funny & moving way) that women CAN do hard things & come out the otherside for the better. #ittakesavillage #motherhood #neon #movieblogger #hosted #lifestyleinfluencer
Mother’s Day was yesterday and while a lot of social media posts would have you believe that parenting is easy and highly rewarding, the film drops a lot of humorous truth bombs. Ilana Glazer and Michelle Buteau give solid performances and their acting chemistry makes you believe that they’ve been friends for decades!
Thanks, Neon for inviting me to this special screening and for the cool goodie bag!
“Babes” opens in theaters on May 17th.
“Babes” is rated R.
