Elio is a delightful movie that explores the themes of self-discovery, loneliness and grief. While the film is about the search for alien existence, it also centers on friendship and the lengths you will go to find people that you connect with.
Meet Elio, a space fanatic with an active imagination and a huge alien obsession. So, when he’s beamed up to the Communiverse, an interplanetary organization with representatives from galaxies far and wide, Elio’s all in for the epic undertaking. Mistakenly identified as Earth’s leader, Elio must form new bonds with eccentric alien lifeforms, navigate a crisis of intergalactic proportions, and somehow discover who and where he is truly meant to be.
In the film, we discover that Elio is shy at school and very lonely.
He is being cared for by his aunt who works in the military, monitoring “space junk” at an Air Force base.
In an unexpected turn of events, Elio makes contact with alien life while using an amateur radio (ham radio). Fun fact: My dad is big ham radio enthusiast and the subplot surrounding Elio and his classmates involving ham radio would make him so happy.
The film features the voices of Yonas Kibreab (“Sweet Tooth”) as Elio, Zoe Saldaña (“Avatar”) as Aunt Olga, Remy Edgerly (“Sing 2”) as Glordon, Brad Garrett (“Everybody Loves Raymond”) as Lord Grigon, Jameela Jamil (“The Good Place”) as Ambassador Questa and Shirley Henderson (“Bridget Jones’s” franchise) as Ooooo.
The film will tug at your heart as you watch Elio gain a sense of belonging. The animation is dazzling and the characters, particularly Glordon (a toothy, wormlike alien), will make you smile!
Overall, the movie is entertaining. It’s action-packed, funny, and has characters that both kids and adults will root for. Thanks, Disney-Pixar for inviting us to screen the movie!
Watch Elio when it opens in theaters nationwide on Friday, June 20th!
