Giving Back is the New Black – Fighting Hunger with #HalfUnited

Posted on November 18, 2014 | Filed Under: Social Good | Tags: fighting hunger necklace, giving back is the new black, Half United | Leave a Comment

A few months ago, I was scrolling through images on my Instagram feed & I came across a photo of a cool necklace made with a recycled bullet casing. The necklace is made by a company called Half United. Not only are the necklaces stylish & so versatile (I can wear them with t-shirts & jeans, tanks, sweaters, etc.) but it also has a social good component to it. That’s because Half United donates HALF of the profits from every product sold directly towards fighting the global hunger epidemic!

Half United was founded in 2009 by siblings Carmin & Christian Black. I love that Half United took something that has a negative association to it & upcycled it into something so fashionable! So why a bullet casing? The casings represent our fight against hunger. Also, this byproduct can be sourced locally in America, which is where all of the jewelry is handmade.

Half United has partnered with organizations that provide meals to children & families in the USA, Cambodia, Madagascar & Fiji. Carmin is very passionate about fighting hunger at both a global AND local level. Check out this short video featuring Carmin & the Half United team building a community garden outside their headquarters in Wilmington, North Carolina.

This is truly a company that believes in their motto of “do your half!” Now not everyone may have an opportunity to volunteer at that level, but I do know people (like me) who will shop for a good cause. Let’s face it, orange may have been the new black a few years ago, but you’ll want to purchase one of these Half United necklaces because giving back is the new black!

I recently wore this shirt from Half United at a family festival attended by several LA bloggers. A few of them complimented the social message of the shirt & asked where I got it from. Just like Half United’s jewelry line, half of the profits from this t-shirt are donated to fighting hunger. Remember, everything is awesome when you do your half!

The holidays are coming & these items from Half United would make great stocking stuffers! I’d love to know what item you would like to give (or receive) as a holiday gift. Let me know in the comments below.

Disclosure: No monetary compensation was received for this post. I received a complimentary item from Half United which helped facilitate this review. All images are my own unless otherwise noted. As always, my opinions are 100% my own.
