Duff’s Cakemix is a DIY cake & cupcake decorating studio. For those of you who read my blog, you’ll recall my daughter & I visited Duff’s in West Hollywood last year. We had so much fun cake decorating. So when we heard that Duff’s Cakemix opened a new location in Tarzana, we couldn’t wait to check it out!

My daughter invited her BFF to join her at Duff’s Cakemix. After checking in at the front, a Duff’s employee walked us through the process. First, the girls looked at some sample cakes & cupcakes to get inspired. You could either choose a design to follow or create something from scratch.

Next they had to decide if they should decorate a 6” round cake or 6 cupcakes. Decisions, decisions… The girls decided on cupcakes & got to pick between two cupcake flavors – vanilla Funfetti or chocolate. My kiddo opted to get 3 of each flavor, whereas her BFF chose all chocolate cupcakes.

Then it was time to choose our frostings & goodies. Duff’s Cakemix has buttercream frosting in a rainbow of colors, as well as a variety of fondants to choose from. You can choose up to 5 total for decorating.

The girls had a hard time choosing which 2 items they wanted from the goodie bar. The sweet treats range from M&M’s, Skittles, gummy bears, sprinkles & so much more!

Once they gathered everything, it was time to grab a table & get a quick tutorial from a Duff’s Cakemix team member.

So what’s the difference between buttercream & fondant? Buttercream frosting is rich, creamy & easy to spread. You can scoop the buttercream into piping bags & decorate.

With fondant, the texture & consistency is like Play-Doh, you have to flatten it out with a rolling pin & then you can use cookie cutters to cut shapes to decorate or just drape it over the cupcake. At Duff’s Cakemix, they have plenty of tools to choose from!

The girls had so much fun decorating their cupcakes! It’s a great activity for playdates, mommy & me time or even for a girls night out! The great thing about it is you & your kids can make a mess, but someone else does the clean-up. Talk about having your cake & eating it too! 😉

Duff’s Cakemix offers party packages at all of their locations (West Hollywood, Tarzana & Pasadena). Whether a birthday party, baby or bridal showers – you name it & they will help you celebrate it!

The studio is located at 18734 Ventura Blvd, Tarzana, CA 91356. It’s just steps away from Whole Foods & Starbucks. There is free parking (for the first 90 minutes) in the underground Whole Foods parking garage.
