For most pet owners, our furry friends are like family. We have a rescue dog, a chihuahua that is 10 years old. When I buy her treats, I made sure they are made with high-quality ingredients because she deserves the best! At Bear & Belle’s Bakery, the dog treats are healthy, organic and baked with love!
I first met Trixie at a festival hosted by Café Aficionado, a family-owned coffee shop located in Northridge. She and her daughter were selling their dog treats at their booth.
I bought a bag of their best-selling Bear Bites and they threw in a sample of their Woofles so that our dog could taste it. To say that our sweet dog Daphne was thrilled would be an understatement.
Since that first time meeting, I’ve continued to see Bear & Belle’s Bakery at pop-ups around the San Fernando Valley. I was intrigued by Trixie’s business and wanted to learn more about her. Please meet the latest Real Mom of the SFV – Trixie, owner and founder of Bear & Belle’s Bakery!
How/why did you begin your business?
Trixie: During the summer of 2020, I truly started to chime into the importance of having healthy eating habits and wanted to ensure that I and my children were doing so, too. My children most definitely include my two dogs, Mozart and Lucille. After reading the back of some store-bought dog treats, I knew for a fact those needed to be tossed into the trash and I needed to start baking in the kitchen. I started giving the treats to friends, family and neighbors who also had dogs at home, and they all told me, “Trixie, our dogs LOVE them! You should really consider making this a business!” Thus began the start of Bear & Belle’s Bakery — named after my two human daughters, Audrey Bear & Zoe Belle!
As a working mother, what is one tip or piece of advice that you would give to other female entrepreneurs?
Trixie: Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. Whether it’s asking someone who runs a business for advice, reaching out to a friend for emotional support, or asking a family member to help watch the kids while you work — remember that the world knows you are just one person trying to perfect the craft of being a successful entrepreneur! At times, being a mama, running a business, taking in uncontrollable realities that life gives you can come tumbling in on you hard and fast, so BREATHE, ask for help and take your time in figuring out how to find your own unique way of balancing out your life!
What do you like best about having a business in the San Fernando Valley?
Trixie: Community, community, community! I cannot express how much I love building my business from the ground up in the San Fernando Valley! The beautiful individuals who I have come across have made this new journey so fun and exciting it’s “reBARKable”! I have been able to reconnect with old friends, as well as make new friends — some are even more like family! Everyone in the small business community comes together to support one another, teach, learn, grow, and most of all we remind one another to have fun! I cannot express enough just how lucky and blessed my family and I are to have SFV as our home!
If there was one thing you wish you knew before you began your business, what would that be?
Trixie: I wish I knew how much confidence I had tucked away in myself. Walking away from working a 9-5 job and becoming my own boss has really shaped me as a person, as a mom. The confidence I found has also touched the lives of all those around me. My friends, family, especially my children, have made them look at themselves a little more and say “Hey, I CAN do this, too! I can accomplish anything I dream to do!” Know that you will make mistakes but learn from them. Know that not everyone will be in your corner, but those who are will push you and love you one hundred times harder. Know that the confidence you have will continue to grow and that alone will make a huge impact on the best creations you’ve made before, your children!
