As a child, I loved reading Roald Dahl’s iconic book featuring Willy Wonka. Over the years, there have been a few movie versions about the owner of the Wonka Chocolate Factory and this latest iteration proves to be a must-see!
Based on the extraordinary character at the center of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Roald Dahl’s most iconic children’s book and one of the best-selling children’s books of all time, “Wonka” tells the wondrous story of how the world’s greatest inventor, magician and chocolate-maker became the beloved Willy Wonka we know today.
From Paul King, writer/director of the “Paddington” films, David Heyman, producer of “Harry Potter,” “Gravity,” “Fantastic Beasts” and “Paddington,” and producers Alexandra Derbyshire (the “Paddington” films, “Jurassic World: Dominion”) and Luke Kelly (“Roald Dahl’s The Witches”), comes an intoxicating mix of magic and music, mayhem and emotion, all told with fabulous heart and humor. Starring Timothée Chalamet in the title role, this irresistibly vivid and inventive big screen spectacle will introduce audiences to a young Willy Wonka, chock-full of ideas and determined to change the world one delectable bite at a time—proving that the best things in life begin with a dream, and if you’re lucky enough to meet Willy Wonka, anything is possible.
Having watched some of the extras that come with the Digital, Blu-ray and DVD versions, one stood out for me and that was the “Welcome to WONKA Land” featurette. In it, I saw all the work that the production and set design teams did to create the world of Wonka. The chocolate shop, in particular, was built on such a grand scale with thoughtful touches. It’s no wonder that “Wonka” was nominated for the Art Directors Guild Award for Best Production Design, Fantasy Feature Film!
This is a fun movie to watch on a Saturday night with the family! You could even host a themed party and have candy, popcorn and special sweet treats. If you need snack board inspiration, I recommend “Once Upon a Rind in Hollywood” which has a Willy Wonka and the Cheesecake Factory recipe! See photo below in the bottom left-hand corner.
For readers with little kids, you’ll be happy to know that I have a FREE Wonka activity kit that you can download and print for your kids. It’s chock-full of games (tic-duck-cocoa), activities (word scramble), and more! Click here to download it now.
The film is available to own on Digital, 4K, Blu-ray and DVD.
“Wonka” is rated PG.
“Wonka” has a run time of approximately 1 hour and 56 minutes.

This was such a great movie. Timothee was fantastic as Wonka, and I really enjoyed seeing his growth throughout the flick. I can’t wait to get it for our collection.
I still have yet to see it but it does look so good! Exciting that it’s now out on DVD, etc!
I love the idea of a recipe that matches a movie! I saw this one in cinema twice – it was so fun and whimsical.
