‘My Penguin Friend’ Arrives On Digital! {Giveaway Contest}

Posted on September 27, 2024 | Filed Under: Pop Culture, Reviews | Tags: Alexia Moyano, DinDim the penguin, Jean Reno, My Penguin Friend | 15 Comments

“My Penguin Friend” is a charming movie based on the true story of the years-long friendship between a Brazilian fisherman and the penguin that he rescued.

Inspired by the incredible true story of DinDim the Penguin, My Penguin Friend tells the story of a little lost penguin who-after being rescued from an oil spill-transforms the life and soul of the heartbroken fisherman. The penguin and the fisherman become unlikely friends, so bonded that even the vast ocean cannot divide them.

The movie opens with a young boy (Miguel) and his father, João getting ready to go fishing. Years later, João (played by Jean Reno) is seen in his fishing boat where he sees a penguin in the distance in distress. João pulls him from the polluted water and brings the penguin home. The poor penguin is soaked in oil, so after feeding him some fish, João gives him a bath.

When João’s wife Maria (played by Adriana Barraza) comes home, she’s dismayed to find a penguin hiding in one of the rooms. However, João grows fond of the penguin and creates a makeshift sweater for the penguin. When the penguin follows him into the village, a little girl, Lucia (played by Duda Galvão) discovers the penguin and names him DinDim.

My Penguin Friend - DinDim

One morning, João gets DinDim’s breakfast ready (fish) and he discovers the penguin has left the nest he made for him. Joao sees DinDim’s little footprints trailing down the beach to the water. However, it’s not long when DinDim returns back to João’s home to visit. João and Maria discover that the penguin now has a red arm band, but think nothing of it.

DinDim swims back and forth from João’s home in Brazil to his real home in Argentina. During one of his return trips to João’s home, someone records DinDim and scientists back in Argentina discover him on television.

What follows is an emotional turn of events that will leave you cheering for DinDim. The film is so touching and will warm your heart. It’s just the kind of movie that audiences need and is perfect for families too!

The film stars Jean Reno (“Ronin”), Adriana Barraza (“Babel,” “Blue Beetle”), Alexia Moyano (“The Kingdom”), and Nicolás Francella (“A Singular Crime”).

Recently, I had the opportunity to interview Alexia Moyano who plays a scientist in the film. Below is an excerpt of our chat.

In the movie, you play Adriana, a marine biologist. What drew you to this role?

Alexia: I really liked Adriana and share a lot in common with her. It’s a different movie, one that is [good] for the whole families and is a great option for kids.

What do you want audiences to take away from the movie?

Alexia: [The film illustrates that] everyone feels loneliness and needs friends. It’s a movie about values and it gives hope. The friendship in the movie [between João and DinDim] is spontaneous. He did what he had to do to help another being.

Did you do anything special to prepare for the role of a marine biologist?

Alexia: I met with marine biologists who work with penguins. They were very helpful and I asked them a lot of questions so that I could feel confident and know what I was speaking about [in the movie].

Alexia Moyano – Interview with Real Mom of SFV

When I asked Alexia what is next on the horizon, she said that she is working on a play in a theater in Buenos Aires and later in October a television series will be released in Argentina where she plays a psychologist. Here’s hoping we see her in future films and/or a TV series in the Unites States!

If you haven’t seen the movie yet, I highly recommend buying it so that you can watch it. It’s a heartwarming tale that is the kind of movie that audiences need to see. Plus, it’s perfect for families too!

“My Penguin Friend” will be available to purchase on Digital this Tuesday, October 1st!
