We all know that Pharrell Williams is a talented artist and prolific record producer, but did you know that he started from humble beginnings in Virginia Beach? “Piece By Piece” explores Pharrell’s life from the early days in high school through current day.
The film is directed by Morgan Neville and features the voices of Gwen Stefani, Kendrick Lamar, Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, Busta Rhymes, Jay-Z, and Snoop Dogg.
“Piece By Piece” is a unique cinematic experience that invites audiences on a vibrant journey through the life of cultural icon Pharrell Williams. Told through the lens of LEGO® animation, turn up the volume on your imagination and witness the evolution of one of music’s most innovative minds.
Admittedly, I am a fan of Pharrell’s music and watching the movie was like a trip down memory lane for me. I loved hearing the familiar strains of Jay-Z’s “I Just Wanna Love U (Give It 2 Me)” and seeing onscreen how Pharrell, along with his producing partner Filipino American Chad Hugo contributed to it, albeit in LEGO form.
The film paints a colorful picture of Pharrell’s many endeavors. Pharrell is someone who clearly enjoys juggling a lot of projects – from his start as one-half of the Neptunes, as an uber producer of so many hit songs, co-founder of fashion brand Billionaire Boys Club (BBC), and even eyewear designer in collaboration with Louis Vuitton.
As you can imagine, all of the various business deals, combined with record executives demanding another hit song, eventually took a toll on Pharrell and lead to a period of anxiety and imposter syndrome. There’s an interesting quote in the movie about “relevancy being a drug” that illustrates perfectly Pharrell’s struggle with self-doubt and eventual recovery, rebuilding his confidence piece by piece.
It’s only fitting that Pharrell’s biopic is constructed through LEGO animation. After all, for an artist who sees colors when he hears music (the scientific term is synesthesia), why not build his vibrant world brick by brick?!
I really enjoyed “Piece by Piece” and I just know that Pharrell’s fans will be entertained by it. This is truly a movie to watch in the theaters with a powerful sound system so that you can listen to the melodies of his pop, hip-hop and R&B songs, while the colorful visuals play out on the big screen.
“Piece By Piece” is rated PG.
The runtime is approximately 93 minutes.
