Lisa Frankenstein {Movie Review}

Posted on February 7, 2024 | Filed Under: Pop Culture | Tags: Carla Gugino, Cole Sprouse, Focus Features, Kathryn Newton, Lisa Frankenstein | 14 Comments

“Lisa Frankenstein” is a campy, comedy horror movie. Think “Edward Scissorhands” meets “Weird Science” with a dash of “Pretty in Pink.” For an ‘80s kid like me, I loved the fashion and music in this film directed by Zelda Williams.

The look of the movie is really spot on, from the clothes and the jelly shoes to the crimped hair and using white out as nail polish. Kathryn Newton (“Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania”) nails her performance as a moody teen and Liza Soberano (“Alone/Together”) is great as a sunny cheerleader.

A coming of RAGE love story from acclaimed writer Diablo Cody (Jennifer’s Body) about a misunderstood teenager and her high school crush, who happens to be a handsome corpse. After a set of playfully horrific circumstances bring him back to life, the two embark on a murderous journey to find love, happiness… and a few missing body parts along the way.

The cast also includes Cole Sprouse (“Riverdale”) as the Creature, Joe Chrest (“Stranger Things”) as Lisa’s dad, and Carla Gugino (“The Fall of the House of Usher”) as Lisa’s stepmom.

Carla Gugino’s over-the-top performance gives wicked stepmother vibes. In fact, some of the insults that she hurls at Lisa had me gasping.

Cole Sprouse has his work cut out for him since his dialogue is mostly grunts; however, it’s his physical comedy that shines.

Overall, the movie is wildly offbeat. Thanks, Focus Features for inviting me to screen “Lisa Frankenstein.”

    Lisa Frankenstein sounds like my cup of corpse yet I’m wondering, and suppose I’ll have to wait for my own viewing, on what had you gasping. Another great preview, Jen, thank you! It’s added to my list!!

    Sounds like a fun movie. I loved all those movies from the 80’s with great fashion and most of all, the music.

    As someone who holds a special place in their heart for all things ’80s, this movie felt like it was made for me. The attention to detail in the set design and costumes was impeccable, transporting me straight back to my childhood!

    Looks like a fun movie! Not to mention they have Lisa Soberano as part of the cast which is enough for us to support this movie. Thank you for sharing your review.

    This sounds like an interesting movie. I can’t believe girls used to use white out for nail polish. I never did that but again I don’t wear a ton of nail polish or make up.
