Disney and Pixar’s all-new animated comedy adventure “Hoppers” opens this Friday, March 6.
The movie is funny, wholly original and has a great message about respecting animals and nature.
In Disney and Pixar’s all-new animated comedy adventure “Hoppers,” animal lover Mabel (voice of Piper Curda) seizes an opportunity to use a new technology to ‘hop’ her consciousness into a life-like robotic beaver and communicate directly with animals. As she uncovers mysteries in the animal world beyond anything she could have imagined, Mabel befriends charismatic beaver, King George (voice of Bobby Moynihan), and must rally the entire animal kingdom to face a major, imminent human-threat: smooth-talking local mayor Jerry Generazzo (voice of Jon Hamm).
“Hoppers” is directed by Daniel Chong, best known for his work on “We Bare Bears” and features the voices of Kathy Najimy (Hocus Pocus), Dave Franco (Now You See Me), and Meryl Streep (The Devil Wears Prada).
The film resonated deeply with me, likely more than for others at last month’s screening. The lead character in the film, Mabel Tanaka, is very close with her Grandma who is a calm and empathetic presence in her life. Mabel’s devotion to Grandma Tanaka is so endearing; made all the more sweeter, when her grandmother, a member of the Beaverton Wildlife Society, leads Mabel to a forest rock to find peace in nature. The scene beautifully captures a touching moment of intergenerational Asian American connection.
Director Daniel Chong, an Asian American, subverts tired “quiet and submissive” stereotypes through Mabel, an outspoken animal-rights activist. By also featuring two female scientists leading the test program, Chong replaces what could have been a default cast of white men with a more inclusive and intentional vision.
I highly recommend watching “Hoppers” when it comes out this weekend! There are scenes that will tug at your heart, along with moments of levity that will have you laughing out loud. It’s a cute movie, sure to entertain both kids AND adults!
“Hoppers” opens in theaters on March 6th.
“Hoppers” is rated PG.
