Growing up, I was at The Los Angeles Zoo at least once a month. Living nearby, my family had yearly passes and some of my earliest memories are at the zoo. While I don’t recall attending any holiday events, I would have flipped at The LA Zoo Lights, happening now through January 3rd.
When the animals head into bed, some serious monkey business occurs as this 133 acres botanical gardens and the entire zoo is completely transformed with thousands upon thousands of beautiful, colorful lights. It’s a huge spectacle before your eyes!
As you walk through, several surprises are in store that will definitely get you and your kids in a merry mood. First up is one of their lovely ponds brought to life with life-size musical notes that light up as a ‘jingle’ tune is played! As you walk on, you might just encounter a disco party just a bit down from the carousel, complete with disco balls!
I was especially excited to stumble upon a spectacular water show that could rival a Disney production. Over one of the animal’s swimming pools, a gorgeous show combining water, lights and fire unveils before your eyes. For a place famous for their wild animals, exhibits and lairs, they also know how to pull out all the stops with a spectacle!
During the day, The LA Zoo is offering a fun “Reindeer Romp” which gives visitors the opportunity to get up close and personal with some of Santa’s majestic helpers. Luckily, for us, the reindeer’s stick around for LA Zoo Lights to give us a chance to say hi, too. And, on select days, you can even meet Santa Claus.
Opening nightly for the season at 6pm, LA Zoo Lights will dazzle audiences til 10pm on weekdays and 10:30pm on weekends. When I arrived, it was quite filled with excited attendees and as the evening went on, the crowds dwindled down, which made this festival of lights even more enjoyable. Several snack stands are awaiting you, too; make sure to check out the delicious home-made kettle corn, and don’t forget a cup of hot cocoa!
While the traditional ritual of trekking the family around in your car to look at lights is always a must, definitely consider The LA Zoo Lights as it will give you the chance to get out of the car, get a great walk in filled with surprises and make new memories with the family. Tickets are selling fast so grab yours HERE and get ready to be mesmerized at The LA Zoo Lights!
