Mommy’s Retreat – A Unique Beauty Salon in Tarzana

Posted on July 3, 2018 | Filed Under: Misc, Mommy Stuff | Tags: beauty salon with childcare, Mommy's Retreat, Tarzana beauty salon | Leave a Comment

**Editor’s Note: As of July 2020, Mommy’s Retreat is closed.**

Mommy’s Retreat is beauty salon that’s just perfect for busy Valley moms. We all know that getting some quality “mom-me” time can be challenging. Between juggling work, school drop-off, kids extra-curricular activities, etc. – it seems as if there’s barely any time left over for a relaxing mani/pedi or a much needed hair color appointment to cover up your roots. Mommy’s Retreat in Tazana has proven to be a solution to that problem.

Mommy's Retreat Signage

Open since May 2017, at first glance Mommy’s Retreat looks like any other beauty salon. As you step further in, you’ll notice a unique section that sets this salon apart from any other in the Valley. There are two separate kids play areas in the back of the salon. So while mom is getting her salon treatments, a Mommy’s Retreat employee supervises the kids in the play area – genius!

One section has a mini ball pit, tiny slide, plastic toy kitchen & a variety of other toys that small children can play with.

The other area has video game chairs, a reading nook, toys & several TVs so that kids can play on the salon’s gaming system. The two play areas are spacious, bright & clean.

The salon is decorated with a pretty couch in the waiting area, comfortable massaging chairs for the manicure/pedicure area & a row of chairs for hair treatments. While I was getting my pedicure, I saw a mother getting highlights done while her two young girls were happily playing in the kids area, just steps away.

Ashley, the stylist who did my Layered Up pedicure, is super friendly. We chatted for a while until we got to the massage portion of my feet & legs. With the massage chair kneading my shoulders & back, plus Ashley working on my legs, I immediately felt sleepy. It was so nice to shut my eyes, even if it was just for 5-10 minutes.

Rest & relaxation in the massage chair while my tween plays video games in the kids area, a few feet away through the glass door in the background.

I know some moms might wonder, what about the chemical smell from the nail polish or hair treatments? One time I took my daughter (she was much younger then) to a salon near my house so that I could get a quick polish change. I was short on time & money for a full-on pedicure. She waited in the lobby area, right next to my chair & hated the smell of the polish. I felt SO guilty & stressed out! Needless to say, it turned out to be a very quick polish change.

At Mommy’s Retreat, you’ll be happy to know that the salon is separated from the children’s area by a glass door & wall.

As moms, the idea of getting your hair cut or colored, having a mani/pedi or waxing that pesky upper lip is sometimes put on the back burner. Your children’s needs & extra-curricular activities (little league, dance class, Gymboree music, etc.) are generally the primary focus. When you finally manage to squeeze in a little me-time, you have the added challenge of finding a family member to babysit or hire a sitter.

Mommy’s Retreat is set-up so that both mother & child(ren) can have a fun outing. Like their tagline says, “Glam my mom, while I play!”

Some thing to note:

  • Mommy’s Retreat is a full-service salon that offers hair services, threading/waxing, blowouts, manicures/pedicures, make-up services & even treatments for kids!
  • They offer free parking in the back. The entrance is in the alley near the Coffee Bean.
  • There is a $5 charge per child for the kids playroom.
  • A Mommy’s Retreat staff member watches the children.
  • All kids must wear socks in the play area. If you forget their socks, you can purchase a pair at the front desk for a nominal fee.

For more information on Mommy’s Retreat, check out their website & Facebook page. You can also watch Mommy’s Retreat being interviewed on KTLA Morning News this Monday, July 9th, during their 5am-8am news program.

Disclosure: No monetary compensation was received for this post. I received a complimentary pedicure from Mommy’s Retreat which helped facilitate this review. All images & opinions are 100% my own.
