A Taste of Chicago with Mild Sauce LA

Posted on September 17, 2018 | Filed Under: Food | Tags: Mild Sauce, Mild Sauce LA, Taffy Grapes | Leave a Comment

Mild Sauce is a condiment that you can only get in Chicago. What is Mild Sauce? It’s like a mash-up of barbecue sauce, hot sauce & ketchup. Mild Sauce tastes great with chicken, fish & fried shrimp.

Up until now, you could only get Mild Sauce when you lived or visited Chicago. However now you can get Chicago-style chicken & fish in Los Angeles at Mild Sauce LA!

Recently I had a lunch at Mild Sauce LA, which is located at the corner of Olympic Blvd & La Cienega. I ordered the trio which is a piece of fried chicken, fried fish & shrimp.

I would describe the taste of Mild Sauce as tangy, mild & a little sweet. Ken Caldwell, co-owner & head chef of Mild Sauce LA, enhances the sauce so that tastes good for every palate.

You can dip your protein AND fries into the mild sauce. I found out that this is what newbies (like me) do the first time they try it. The real way of eating fried food with mild sauce is to smother it like this (see below).

One tip I learned from Ken is that you take the lemon pepper & sprinkle it all over the fried food. It really brings out the flavor!

Another trick I learned is to take a bite of the fried food with the mild sauce, then bite the green pepper & then lastly, take a bite of the coleslaw. The flavors are amazing – like a party in my mouth! 😉

Mild Sauce LA has plenty of seating. There’s even board games to play with while you wait for your food.

One thing to note is the food is made from scratch, to order. This is not fast food people, it’s made fresh when you order it. So you will have to wait 15-20 minutes before the food comes out but it is SO worth it! NOTE: Call ahead to order & it will be ready when you pick it up!

There is one item that is on the menu that is not made by Ken or the Mild Sauce LA team. However, you MUST try it & it is the Taffy Grapes! Taffy Grapes are a Chicago dessert & I’m so glad that you can get it in LA now.

Mild Sauce LA gets the dessert from a local LA company called DD’zTreatz. Taffy Grapes are always made with green grapes that are dipped in chocolate & topped with candy (think M&M’s or Oreos). You’ll get a little container of caramel to dip the grapes in. If you like caramel apples or chocolate covered strawberries, then you’ll like Taffy Grapes!

All in all, the food at Mild Sauce LA is delicious. The fried chicken is very moist, not dry at all & it’s flavorful (even without the lemon pepper or mild sauce). April, co-owner of Mild Sauce, says that it’s due to Ken’s technique of cleaning the chicken. Ken takes great care & a long process to clean & prep the chicken before frying it. You can literally taste the difference, because the fried chicken is both moist AND crispy.

Although Mild Sauce LA has only been open for two months, April said that there are expansion plans in the works (possibly a location in the Valley), as well as a food truck. The restaurant has a lot of repeat customers. In fact, a little birdie told me that a LA Laker gets his food from Mild Sauce LA.
