A few weekends ago, my family & I visited Dreamscape VR. If you’re into virtual reality (VR), this is an experience that you’ll want to try!
Dreamscape is located inside of the Westfield Century City shopping mall. They use the most advanced VR technologies, along with amazing storytelling & a fantastic music score in the background. This should come as no surprise when you find out that Dreamscape was co-founded by veteran producer Walter Parkes (“Men in Black” film series & “Minority Report” & Steven Spielberg is one of several investors. Hans Zimmer is also an investor & his company, Bleeding Fingers Music, worked on the sound.
There are three stories/experiences that you can try at Dreamscape VR: Alien Zoo, Lavan’s Magic Projector: The Lost Pearl & TheBlu: Deep Rescue. Each experience requires a separate ticket.
We tried TheBlu: Deep Rescue which is about an underwater mission to rescue whales.
When you first check-in at Dreamscape, you’ll notice that it is reminiscent of a train station. The travel theme is not only in the storytelling but reinforced in the interior design.
You’ll sign an electronic waiver during check-in. My daughter read through her own waiver but take note that a parent or legal guardian has to sign the waiver if the child is under 13 years old.
After a brief wait, we were called in to “board” the experience.
Once inside our room, it was time to get into gear…literally!
A Dreamscape employee will help you gear up before escorting your group (maximum is 6 people) to the adventure pod. You’ll put on a light backpack, hand sensors, shoe sensors & a VR headset. Both my hubby & daughter wear glasses. Fortunately, the Oculus headsets can accommodate most glasses & so they were able to slip on the headset over their glasses.
Once suited up, it’s time to go inside! No cameras or smartphones are allowed inside so that you can have a complete experience & fully immerse yourself in the adventure. You can leave your personal belongings in the Gear Up Room so that you’re hands are free for the VR adventure.
A narrator/host will guide you through the steps. In TheBlu: Deep Rescue you interact with a physical object (grabbing the handle bars of underwater scooters) to dive deep into the ocean. Together, your group of 6 people, will together towards a shared goal of saving the whales.
Following the experience, you can visit the gift shop section of the Departure Lounge, where they have refreshments & souvenirs.
Dreamscape is a really neat experience! It’s not like a traditional VR game where you fight someone. It’s a team-building adventure, where you get to be the hero of your own story. Thanks Dreamscape for hosting us!
