Beautycon is known for their beauty conferences that showcase new beauty products. Their festivals in LA & NYC gather beauty bloggers, make-up enthusiasts & social media influencers all in one place. It’s been dubbed the “Super Bowl of the beauty industry” by the New York Times.
What’s interesting to note is that the founder of Beautycon, Moj Mahdara, focuses on empowering women and highlighting beauty in ALL forms. This translates to celebrating diversity & reinventing beauty standards.
Beautycon POP is a not a beauty conference but rather a long-term pop-up that’s taken over a 20,000-square-foot venue, located one block south of the Beverly Center in Los Angeles.
The pop-up, which aims to redefine traditional beauty standards, is made up of four spaces: eight Instagram-friendly art installations, a salon, a retail shop & a main gallery for panels (like the recent event with Tracee Ellis Ross).
Some of the experiential sections range from a prism powder room, a stairway to the ceiling (very similar to Drake’s “Hotline Bling” video), a first-class airline cabin & even a “Confidence Runway” sponsored by Macy’s where you can strut your stuff, complete with music AND fans to blow your hair back.
We were able to capture our “modeling” video because a few of the experiential installations offer complimentary photos and/or videos that you can send to your phone so that later you can share to Instagram or Facebook.
Overall, the experience was a blast & also empowering. If you like pop-up selfie museums & as long as you go in with a good attitude (along with the knowledge that you will have to wait for certain rooms), then you’ll have fun too!
After all, we all want to be like Rihanna & shine bright like a diamond! 😉
I especially liked the very last section of the pop-up which is the Confidence Runway. While we were waiting for our turn, I read the message on the wall & felt inspired.
It reminded me of when I was in junior high & I would look at fashion magazines but never see Asian models. On some level, it made me think that people who looked like me would never be seen as beautiful in America. That’s why I was so thrilled when the movie “Crazy Rich Asians” came out & was so successful. I applaud Beautycon’s founder, Moj Mahdara for putting out these messages of inclusion & diversity, as well as giving us a space to feel beautiful & loved!
Beautycon POP is open on the weekends (Friday-Sunday) & has been extended through January 27th. Kids 13 years old & under must be accompanied by an adult. Children under 6 years old are free. You’ll need to purchase timed tickets in advance.
