The Adventures of Rockford T. Honeypot {Book Giveaway}

Posted on July 13, 2020 | Filed Under: Books | Tags: children's book, Josh Gottsegen, OneLight Publishing, The Adventures of Rockford T. Honeypot | 4 Comments

As a child, I enjoyed summertime because it meant sleeping in, fun playdates, and spending time reading books that I enjoyed – novels and mysteries that transported me away to another time and place. With “The Adventures of Rockford T. Honeypot” – your child will be able to go on escapades with Rockford and his friends.

As a young chipmunk, shy, bookish Rockford T. Honeypot had dreams of thrilling adventures across the forest. However, timid of danger and germs, his only adventures were found in books and his imagination. When his family abandons him after a mistake that destroys their hazelnut business, Rockford sets off on a legendary journey beyond his wildest dreams. From exploring cuisines with a famous chef, training with ancient warrior monks, flying on giant hawks, finding true love, and much more, Rockford recounts his epic origin story of hardship, perseverance, and fortune.

In the book, Rockford encounters an array of characters – from Chuck, a smooth-talking hawk pilot, to Jewel, a beautiful heiress with a heart of gold, and Braxton, a villainous chipmunk from Rockford’s past who is intent on stealing every scrap of his success, plus many more!

Recently I had the opportunity to interview the author, Josh Gottsegen, who you can see in the photo above, posing with his cast of characters!

Real Mom of SFV: The illustrations (book cover) and images at the beginning of each chapter are so cute. Did you work with an illustrator or draw them yourself?

Josh: I worked closely with an illustrator, Viktoria Kleyn. She’s very talented, and I spent many hours explaining and revising each image as we tried to create a pictorial representation that encapsulated each chapter.

Real Mom of SFV: I love all of the characters in the book. Are there any based on people you know?

Josh: Yes! Every character has traits inspired by people I know or have met in the past. I also included a little of myself in Rockford and various characters. With all the characters being animals, it was fun to add these traits while keeping specific animal gestures.

When asked what he would like kids to take away from the book, Josh replied, “There are two messages I’d like readers of all ages to take from the book. First, never give up on your dreams, even when people tell you it’s impossible. If you have a goal in life and work hard towards reaching the unshelled diamond on your path, anything is possible. Secondly, Rockford’s communication with all animals throughout the book, no matter the species, comes from a place of respect, gratitude, and kindness. It didn’t matter if it was a squirrel or rabbit; he treated others the way he wanted to be treated.”

I couldn’t help but wonder, since Josh created a world so rich with amazing stories and lively characters, will this be his first book of several in a series or a one-off? Josh said, “There are several other books on the drawing board from Tropland Forest. More than a pawful of characters that have fun and exciting adventures to tell!”

This book is a perfect summer read for children ages 8-14! It’s fun, exciting, and also filled with teachable moments – encouraging kids to pursue their dreams and persist.

    If I won this, I would love to give it to my niece. She has been having some struggles this year with the change in how school worked. She has slowed on her reading. This sounds like a wonderful book that she would really enjoy.
