Over the summer, while my daughter was away at sleepaway camp, my husband and I treated ourselves to a staycation in Marina del Rey. Roughly 25 miles (one-way) from our house in the Valley, Marina del Rey Hotel felt like it was in another world – with cool breezes from the water and beautiful views from our balcony.
Our hotel room was spacious for us with two queen beds, a bathroom with a roomy closet, a side chair, a small desk and a beautiful view of the marina.
The desk area had plenty of outlets to charge a cell phone and laptop, which proved helpful, as this was a working vacation for me. Although, I did answer a few work emails out on the balcony!
I mean, who can resist this view?!?
The pool area is super nice! It overlooks the marina and there are plenty of lounge chairs, cabanas and small tables, just in case you want to order light bites and drinks to nosh on poolside.
Speaking of food, after we checked in, we walked a short distance to the shopping center, where we had a reservation at PLANTA Cocina for dinner. The relaxing stroll from our hotel to the restaurant was just what we needed! You can read all about our dining experience here. The short version…we loved it!
Later that night, with blackout curtains and fresh air coming from the ocean, I slept like a baby. In the morning, I whipped open the drapes, stepped out onto the balcony and listened to sea lions as they sunned themselves on the docks.
For breakfast, we opted to eat at SALT Restaurant & Bar. The restaurant is set inside the hotel, although you can sit out on their patio and have views of the marina while you dine.
Marina del Rey is the perfect place for Southern California locals to visit for a weekend staycation! For those wanting a traditional week-long vacation, I highly recommend staying at Marina del Rey Hotel. It’s close to Santa Monica and Venice, beach communities with plenty of things to do. If you’d rather stay close to the marina, there’s kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding at Mother’s Beach, numerous restaurants to try out and nearby Fisherman’s Village where you can take part in retail therapy or take a City Cruise!
Thanks to Marina del Rey Hotel for hosting our stay and to SALT Restaurant & Bar for our delicious meal!

What a wonderful trip! It’s amazing that you can go just a short distance and the change can bring ocean breezes and sea lions. 🌊 🦭

Yes!! As Valley girls, we certainly bring the heat, but need to cool off once in a while. 😉
