Even though we live in a digital world, there’s something to be said about flipping through a glossy magazine and feeling the paper in your hands. I enjoy reading articles and taking in all the photos and print ads. It’s hard to explain why I prefer that medium over a digital version. Although I must admit, when I have a quick need to consume information, the online magazine will do.
Last month I had a conversation with someone who lives in both worlds, online and print media. We discussed our enthusiasm for living in the San Fernando Valley and how we both like to highlight local businesses. Our mutual interests sparked my curiosity and I wanted to learn more about how she got into the magazine industry.
Please meet the latest Real Mom of the SFV – Ly French, Publisher of Porter Ranch Living!
How/why did you begin your business?
Ly: I’ve always been passionate about storytelling and connecting people. When I asked to be the publisher of Porter Ranch Living, I realized it was the perfect platform to bring a community together by sharing positive, uplifting stories about local residents and businesses. I saw an opportunity to create something meaningful—a publication that not only informs but also inspires and strengthens ties within the Porter Ranch area. I began this journey because I truly believe in the power of community and wanted to play a part in fostering that connection. I started my sales and marketing career at L.A. Parent after receiving my BA and MA in Communication Studies. Now I’ve come full circle and can use all that I’ve learned to continue helping individuals, families and businesses further grow and tell their stories.
What is one tip or piece of advice that you would give to other female entrepreneurs?
Ly: Trust yourself and your vision. Also surround yourself with people who uplift and inspire you—mentors, peers, and even employees who believe in your mission. Embrace collaboration, ask for help when needed, and don’t shy away from opportunities to learn and grow.
Remember, it’s okay to take risks and make mistakes; those moments often lead to the greatest lessons. Most importantly, stay authentic and grounded in your purpose—it’s your unique perspective and determination that will set you apart.
Entrepreneurship thrives on shared knowledge and support. Also, trust your instincts—they will guide you when things get tough.
What do you like best about having a business in the San Fernando Valley?
Ly: I love the sense of community here in the San Fernando Valley. It’s a unique mix of small-town warmth and big-city opportunity. The people are diverse, supportive and inspiring. There’s always a story worth telling. Working with local businesses and residents, I’ve found that everyone is eager to contribute to the betterment of the community, which makes what I do very rewarding.
If there was one thing you wish you knew before you began your business, what would that be?
Ly: I wish I had known how important it is to embrace imperfection. As a perfectionist, I initially wanted everything to be flawless before putting it out into the world. But I’ve learned that growth comes from trying, learning and refining as you go. Starting is often the hardest part and once you take that leap, you realize the process is what makes our journey worthwhile.

I always love reading interviews from others. It is nice to get to know them all more. Sounds like someone I need to check out.
This is such a great interview. I’m a perfectionist too so I totally understand. We learn as we gain experience.
Thank you for sharing this interview. If you would have asked me if I was going to be an entrepreneur and online writer, I would have said no way I can’t write good content. But in 2012, during a medical layoff, I started a small niche blog and then transformed it into a parenting blog. It took off and did very well. Now here I am 12 years later. I like other women to share their stories of how they got started.
I loved reading this interview and enjoyed her answers and perspectives. I will be sure to check out Porter Ranch living for sure!![My Profile](https://www.realmomofsfv.com/wp-content/plugins/commentluv/images/littleheartplus.png)
