I’ve known Selena Hughes for about 5 years. We are both lifestyle bloggers & often see each other at events in Los Angeles. During the past couple of years, I’ve gotten to know Selena & her family a lot better. We’ve leaned on each other during some challenging times & I’ve found her to be a great listener. Selena is a talented writer & fabulous mom, someone who I am proud to call my friend!
Please meet the latest Real Mom of the SFV – Selena Hughes!
How/why did you begin your business?
Selena: My business, selenahughes.com, was born out of a hobby. I had previously been publishing a newsletter about family entertainment in Hollywood for over five years and had been noticing a change in the market. I noticed that independent brands were a lot more successful and had access to more opportunities than I did, being under a network. This lead to my hobby morphing into a business. Once, I started my own site, I was able to see that the sky was the limit as an entrepreneur.
As working mothers, what is one tip or piece of advice that you would give to other female entrepreneurs?
Selena: As a working mother, the best tip that I can offer to other female entrepreneurs is to create a realistic schedule, both personally and professionally. This priceless bit of information was given to me by another working mom that saw my struggle to balance it “all”. I’m still tweaking my calendar and am enjoying the work-life balance a lot better. It’s never perfect, but good works on any day!
What do you like best about having a business in the San Fernando Valley?
Selena: What I like best about having a business in the San Fernando Valley is that I get to know my community. There is such a diverse mixture of cultures and businesses here that one could hardly get bored. There’s always a new experience, restaurant opening or family activity going on.
If there was one thing you wish you knew before you began your business, what would that be?
Selena: Honestly, if there was one thing that I wish I knew before I began my business it would be to have taken the chance when I first had the hunch too. I was under a national publishing network that was so supportive that I second-guessed my own creative and entrepreneurial abilities to go out on my own. Luckily, I began receiving encouragement and support from other working moms in my industry and eventually spread my wings and launched selenahughes.com.
