Last month I had the opportunity to visit the LA headquarters of the Children’s Hunger Fund and tour their immersive experience, Poverty Encounter. My husband and I had never experienced anything like it before.
Poverty Encounter includes a 75-minute guided tour, followed by a 30-minute service activity in their volunteer center. After my husband and I signed our waivers, we joined a tour group and walked through four different exhibits. Each exhibit immerses you in a different country, where you get to hear stories of hardship and extreme poverty.
Poverty Encounter is a very moving experience that allows you to listen to people explain their circumstances while immersed in a physical setting that mirrors their living conditions.
Those stories include:
- A young child living near a trash dump in Guatemala and rummaging through garbage to find food.
- Jasmine, a young Haitian girl who was displace by the 2010 Port-au-Prince earthquake.
- Underage workers dealing with harsh conditions at a brickyard in Nepal.
- Romanian children living in underground sewers.
Throughout the Poverty Encounter experience our guide explained how Children’s Hunger Fund (CHF) helps kids in need, both in the United States and abroad.
At the very end of the tour, we stepped into CHF’s Volunteer Center, where we made food paks for families in need.
If you live in Southern California, I encourage you to visit the Poverty Encounter immersive experience in Sylmar and learn more about CHF. Our tour included families of all ages, a mother-daughter duo, plus me and my husband. It’s an eye-opening experience, one that I will encourage my own daughter to visit when she is home from college.
Would you like to give back and help? Here’s how:
- Become a CHF Volunteer at one of their centers in Los Angeles, Dallas or San Antonio
- Collect money donations
- Donate supplies to fill a food pak
Thanks Children’s Hunger Fund for inviting me and my husband to tour your headquarters and learn more about your non-profit organization!

I love this because it cements an idea into a reality in people’s minds. Everyone should visit if they can and then donate.

So many children and families are living in conditions like these or even worse, but it’s an academic idea to most of us. I love this experience because it makes it real.

Wow, what an experience. And an education. It’s so good to be aware of what life is like for others not as fortunate as ourselves – and then to volunteer to help is such a great thing.
