“Nutley, the Nut-free Squirrel” is a sweet book about a squirrel with a food allergy. Children will be delighted as they read about Nutley’s journey to stay healthy with the support of his friends. This charming little squirrel won’t let his nut allergy get in the way of living his best life!

Nutley, the Nut-free Squirrel - book cover

When my daughter was about 2 ½ years old, we had her tested for allergies. My husband is allergic to walnuts and I had a feeling that my daughter might have nut allergies as well. It turns out that she is allergic to peanuts and tree nuts. At that age, it’s difficult to explain the concept of food allergies but we did the best that we could.

That’s why I’m thrilled to share with you my discovery of “Nutley, the Nut-free Squirrel” book. The book is written by Stephanie Sorkin and illustrated by Tim Warren. It’s the perfect book for young readers because it highlights the importance of understanding, empathy, and friendship as it relates to food allergies.

I wish that I had this book when my daughter was younger. I think it would have made it easier for her to explain to her elementary school friends about her nut allergies. I remember the day when she learned that one of her classmates was allergic to dairy. I think it made her feel less alone because she could relate to another student.

Nutley’s message of community support is sure to resonate with your early reader. Regardless of whether or not your child has food allergies, the message in the book provides a wonderful lesson on compassion.
