When my daughter was in elementary school, I remember helping my daughter with her math homework. During her middle school years, her dad thankfully stepped in to coach her through geometry. Had it not been for my husband, I probably would have turned to a tutor like Ms. Diaz Tutoring to help my daughter with her studies.
If you live in the San Fernando Valley, chances are you’ve heard of Ms. Diaz Tutoring or you know someone whose kids use their services. This mobile tutoring service offers early childhood tutoring, kindergarten through high school tutoring, and even SAT / ACT prep.. Recently I interviewed Angie to find out what inspired her to open her business.
Please meet Angie Diaz, owner and founder of Ms. Diaz Tutoring!
How/why did you begin your business?
Angie: I was working as a substitute teacher in 2020 when COVID-19 happened. During the height of the pandemic, we were all told that we would be teaching online for an unknown length of time. I was teaching Spanish to students who were in kindergarten through fifth grade. I remember how I taught myself all of the tech features and became good at it, and with these tools, I was able to engage my students and make learning truly fun.
This motivated me to become self-employed and help struggling students. As time went on, I created my own tutoring website and I started promoting my tutoring business, “Ms. Diaz Tutoring.” That is how it all started and before I knew it, I was getting bookings!
What is one tip or piece of advice that you would give to other female entrepreneurs?
Angie: One suggestion that I would give to other female entrepreneurs is to believe in yourself always. Even when things get tough, keep going! I would also tell them to take those risks because you never know how much better things can turn out. Anything is possible!
What do you like best about having a business in the San Fernando Valley?
Angie: What I like best thing about having a business in the Valley is the community. It really feels like a small town. Everyone knows each other, so news about good businesses spreads quickly. I have been very lucky to meet such wonderful families all over the San Fernando Valley.
If there was one thing you wish you knew before you began your business, what would that be?
Angie: It would be to connect with other like-minded individuals and people who share your interests. These contacts can really help you along the way and be a forever helping hand. It was not until I started my business that I started joining social groups and networking. I wish I had known about this sooner, as it would have helped me for sure.

She sounds like such a wonderful lady. I think it’s great of anyone to be able to tutor. My youngest daughter is actually a tutor at school.
What a great interview! Like so many people, she was able to change the course of her career for the better as a result of Covid!

Great post on Angie. I love how she advises that entrepreneurs need to believe in themselves and take risks. Great advice and I’ve always had great respect for those who offer tutoring services
Excellent questions, Jen. Especially on advice as female entrepreneurship is on the rise. Contacts of likeminded, females in particular these days, is essential! Great article.
