Let’s Play is an initiative launched in 2011 by Dr Pepper Snapple Group to provide kids & families with the tools, places & inspiration to make active play a daily priority.
As a mom of a middle schooler, I know how important it is for my daughter to get outside & play. My kiddo is involved with martial arts & is striving to get her black belt. Many of her school friends play sports after school – little league baseball, club volleyball, gymnastics, etc.
We all know that these extra-curricular activities require commitment, time & money in order to participate. I am fortunate to be able to provide my daughter with a structured activity after school. Not only that, but the school that she attends has a wonderful PE program with an updated facility & enough sports equipment for all students. Unfortunately, not everyone has this level of opportunity.
In high schools across the United States, there are school gyms that are outdated & run down, sports equipment that is broken & athletic gear that’s torn and/or ill-fitting. In partnership with the nonprofit organizations KaBOOM! and Good Sports, Let’s Play is working to eliminate the ‘play deficit’ by building & improving play spaces & providing grants for athletic equipment & gear.
Through DPS’s partnership with Good Sports, Let’s Play has donated more than $4.5 million in brand-new sports equipment over the past three years as part of Dr Pepper Snapple’s $38.5 million investment by 2020 to bring active play to kids in need. This enables countless children to stay fit, be active & train in a sport that they enjoy. It gives kids something to focus on. For some students who might ordinarily get distracted by negative influences, having sports in their lives fosters confidence, gives them hope & inspires them to not only excel out on the court or field but also in the classroom. That’s a win-win in my book!
So how can we help? The Let’s Play High School Makeover Challenge is a video contest sponsored by Dr Pepper Snapple Group that benefits student-athletes at underfunded high schools across the U.S. Ten finalists will be chosen by the public through online voting. A panel of representatives from Dr Pepper Snapple Group and Good Sports will then determine the winning school, which will receive $100,000 in brand-new athletic equipment.
I encourage you to visit the website, follow along with the contest using the hashtag #LetsPlayHSMakeover & check out the videos here! The voting period is September 8-17, 2017. We all know that sports have the ability to transform & make a big impact on a student’s life. Your vote can help make a difference!
